.Yahoo rejects joint Microsoft, Icahn proposal

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc on Saturday rejected a proposal to sell its search business to Microsoft Corp and hand over the remainder of the company to activist investor Carl Icahn.

Yahoo said in a statement it received the joint proposal from Microsoft and Icahn on Friday evening and was given less than 24 hours to accept. It said Microsoft and Icahn made clear they were unwilling to negotiate the fundamental terms, which include the immediate replacement of Yahoo's board and removal of top management.

The company said the "take it or leave it" deal that was offered would also preclude a potential sale of all of Yahoo "for a full and fair price, including a control premium."

"This odd and opportunistic alliance of Microsoft and Carl Icahn has anything but the interests of Yahoo's stockholders in mind," Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock said in the statement.

"Clearly, Microsoft, having failed to advance in search, is aligning with the short-term objectives of Mr. Icahn to coerce Yahoo into selling its core strategic search assets on terms that are highly advantageous to Microsoft, but disadvantageous to Yahoo stockholders," Bostock said.

The move comes a few weeks before Yahoo's annual meeting on August 1, when Icahn is seeking to oust Chief Executive Jerry Yang and replace the nine-member board with his own slate of directors. Icahn owns nearly 5 percent of Yahoo shares.

Microsoft, which has been embroiled in on-again, off-again deal talks with Yahoo for six months, has said it no longer wants to negotiate with Yang's team, but that it is willing to resume talks if a new management is in place on August 1.

Yahoo did not detail the financial returns of the new proposal from Microsoft and Icahn, saying only that it was an improvement over an offer the software maker made in June but still carried less financial value and more risk than Yahoo's current search advertising deal with Google Inc.

So I was checking Rano's Site the other day and I saw something interesting. It's about the trojan link in the MSN Messenger. So what is it all about? Well, I'm sure most of us have experienced this; when one of your contact just private message you sending links to your picture, games etc, and when you look at their status they are actually offline. The links would look something like this.

Let me share my some of my knowledge to you my dear readers. Above are some examples of what is sent to you by the victims of this trojan.

It contains a link which is optional to press, and this link is supposedly gonna show of this picture. Nosy receivers click the link and they can then start regretting.

What happens when you press the link, is that your computer downloads a so called 'Downloader', a small program clip that again downloads a more vicious code. We are talking about a "bot-code", who in short terms means that the infected computer connects to a network who can be controlled by others, say Head Director Christophe Birkeland in NorCERT, a sub-department of National Security Authority who works secifically with IT-threats. In other words, if you click on the link, you would somehow become a "puppet" controlled by a stranger. In the IT Security world, people refer these PCs as a zombie PC, where it can become one of its puppet to hack into large organisation without exposing themselves. Plus, when you are affected by the trojan, the frightening thing is, it is very hard to detect it. Results shows that under half of the 30 anti virus program that was tested could not spot the trojan.

So what do you need to do when you get this links? My advice:

1. No matter how tempting or convincing the link might be, DO NOT attempt to click on it. The trojan has what we call a spreadvector, which adapts to the language your operatve system is in.

2. Check whether your contact is online.

3. Let them know that their machine has been infected by the trojan. And tell them to reinstall their Messenger.

Note that this virus only affects Windows Operating System. So Mac or Linux users who are connected to the MSN will have nothing to worry about.

The Energy Week which was held on the 25th May 2008 at Taman Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien and was organised by the Energy Division, Prime Minister's Office. Some of the pictures that was taken on the Football tournament last Sunday. The tournament was held at the Stadium Hassanal Bolkiah Police Headquarters by Rumah Perkasa of JPM (Proper). The event took place the whole day and the format for the morning session was league and knock-out in the afternoon ( I'm not good with the football terms *sorry*). Four 'houses'; Rumah Laksamana, Perkasa, Satria and Wijaya fought hard for the championship and Rumah Wijaya won the morning session, where Rumah Laksamana won the knock-out match. The day ended with the closing ceremony of the JPM Sports which has been running since end of February. *Sorry guys.. was too lazy to update thats why*

.The Health Briefing

Attended a Health Briefing today at the IPA building conducted by the Ministry of Health in conjunction to the Health Screening Program and Health Promotion for the Civil Servants. The session is divided into two, which include the briefing and the health screen itself. The briefing kicked off yesterday and continued today for separate groups and the screening will be on the 9th til 13th February 2008. Will talk about the screening next time but now I am going to share what happens at the briefing today since all the civil servants are going to do this after us anyway.

So we came at 8 for registration and then proceed to the lecture theatre for the briefing. The thing starts off with the recital of the Surah Al-Fatihah led by one the officers. Then we had to listen to 4 briefings carried out by the representatives from the Ministry of Health. They are the Program briefing, “Specimen” collection briefing, Oral Health Briefing and lastly we were even briefed on how to fill in the forms. After the Q n A session is off to the lobby for Makan. And then back to work.

How Long Has iT Been? 33 days? Apologies for the silence as I've been into alot of commitments this past few weeks. What have I been doing? I was busy practising for the upcoming Sukan JPM. Its an annual thing we have at my workplace. The events include Bowling, Football, Badminton and Netball and I am taking part in Football and Badminton. Will provide a coverage on that soon. Other than that I am also involved in the National Day practise which involves dancing and march pass.

And lastly I also attended the courses Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 and Microsof Office Sharepoint Server 2007. The course was organised by Microsoft Brunei at PGGMB Building and the trainer for the course was Gerald Hoong from Malaysia. It was a 5 days course and at the end of it, we are required to take the exams as well. I've passed the WSS 3.0 exam today which makes me a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist for WSS 3.0 and tomorrow I will be sitting for the MOSS 2007 exam. Wish me luck on that.

.The Cleaning Campaign

Had a cleaning campaign at the office a few weeks back. So we cleaned up the store room area downstairs, which took us the whole day because the place looked kinda abandoned. It could have been a good spot for ghost hunt considering how old my office building is. It used to be the Finance office back in the 50s though and even now you can still see the cctv cameras at some locations of the room. Now it is just an, I don't know, a haunted storeroom which I would'nt dare to stay even for a minute in there alone. Anyway, the picture below shows the look and feel before and after the campaign.

Sorry for the late update. As promised, today we will be looking at how we celebrate Hari Raya Korban at home. Usually we pick up the legs and hands from the slaughter house and bone it ourselves at home. So I can tell you more or less how it is done once the parts arrive home.

1. Hang the parts and bone it.

2. Cut it into smaller parts

3. Weigh it (usually 1kg) and then put it in a plastic bag.

4. Give it to our fellow Muslim neighbours.

This year is kind of different because we get to see how a chicken is slaughtered. *Hehe*

Well actually kids should not be watching it.

What a day. I was at the beach today with my family. Had a great time because we don’t usually go out that much and since its school holiday, it’s the only chance where we can spend time together. Everything went well until this incident. My cousins were playing football with this bunch of people. We usually do that because it’s a chance for us to socialize with new people. So they played while I was just sitting and enjoying my food. As I finished my food I went to look at the game and took some pictures. I thought my cousins are losing coz they were all look unhappy with the ‘L’ look on their faces. It was pretty logical though because looking at their match, I think they lose in terms of body size. Haha So I decided to tag along. The game was okay, as per usual, all the running around until I realize that the other team keep on shooting the ball far behind the goal post. Then there’s also this guy (let’s call him L for now) who kept on saying “wei friendly wah, fun fun saja” and I thought he was right since it’s just a friendly game. Not long after a middle-aged guy came tagged in with the opposing team. Once he got the ball, he just shot the ball way behind the goal post. I was irritated by his action because I know he did it on purpose so I said “padang damit bui, jantah tandang jauh-jauh” then L got offended and said “eh, relax wah, friendly ja, mun kan marah jan main (something like that)” so I said OK. So the game resumed until I got the ball the middle-aged guy tackled me and in the end I lose control of the game. L, assuming I would be pissed by the tackle (which I was’nt because I know its just body contact) shouted something like don’t play rough and the middle-aged guy said its body contact and I also said its OK. Then all of a sudden this L guy came up to me and picked a fight, telling me to watch my mouth and think before I say something. I was like, what’s going on here, it’s just a game and that also offended him. Man, this guy is really hard to deal with. Probably because he has a big fat body and he can bully anyone around. Come on, he’s playing with a bunch of kids of age 15 – 18 years old and he had the nerve to pick a fight. How uncivilized and immature was that. He told me that my cousins had been playing rough since the very beginning which made him play along “to make sure they’re playing fair” in fact he started the mess. And the uncle (I dun’t think it’s his uncle. Probably his dad. Is that how a grown up should react? You are so immature. In the end I managed to cool his small head off because I don’t want to get involved in fights. I never like it. I would like to be hit though, so I can report it to police and have you pay me $2000 cash. Hehe

But this is the thing. It’s a shame to have our people with this kind of attitude. For example like in this situation, by his reaction just now, my cousins got kind of traumatised to play the moment he lose his head and picked the fight. They were all scared, not because they’re coward, but its because we were not raised in a barbaric way as L, and this kind of scene is a new thing to them. I hope what happened today won’t stop them from socializing with others through football.

And as for you L, you might think you were cool picking a fight with my cousins. Well guess what, I have your picture. Now everybody in Brunei will know how big a loser you are. This is the year 2007 “bui”, we live in a high tech world now. This is not the barbaric age to think that picking a fight would make you cool. Sorry loser, you should go out more often, see the world and learn to socialise. Not just stay in your sick small hut and count ants. Shame on you. No wonder your friends never invite you to play soccer with them, because you do not have the sportsmanship spirit. All said. I feel better now. hehe

Had a great lunch today at Savy's Bressarie. For those who do not know where it is, it's located above TFC Restaurant/CD Shop in Bandar. Next to Parking Bertingkat. I've never heard of the place before until Wan Kong brought me there today. As we walked in, we were greeted with a smile from the staffs of the restaurant, which is a very good first impression in my opinion. The place looks classy and the ambience is so nice. Kudos to the owner who have done a really good job revamping the place up. I remember the last time I went to that place was like 10 years ago when it was a barder shop. *i think*

Anyway, we sat down to order. I ordered Lamb Stew and Wan Kong ordered Fish and Chips. While waiting, I walked around to take some pictures of the place. I gotta say I really like the environment. *Hehe* It took a bit while for our order to come but at least they served us with their home made bread. And the bread, it's crunchy outside and so soft inside and you can taste the seasonings and tastes even better with the dip. Good quality bread. I like.

We were also lucky today having the waiter to serve us with his new recipe for appetizer, the "Home-Made Smoked Fish". I don't know how to explain but man it was so awesomely great. So yeah about my order, i took some time for it to arrive but trust me, It really is worth the wait. My Lamb Stew is served with a garlic bread and salad and the Fish and Chips... well there's fish and fries ofcourse and comes with a soup. I've tried the lamb stew at Andaman Restaurant before and I can assure you, this one's better. The fish was good too. Well, I didnt try but Wan Kong said the Fish and Chips here is different. I mean in other places they put more flour in the fish but this one, it's pure fresh fish covered in a thin layer of flour. After main course, had a cup of coffee and then we left, with a great satisfaction.

I am not a professional Food Critic but If I were to rate the place, I would give it a 9 for the food, 9.5 for the service, 9 for the environment and 7 for the price. It was also an honor to have the owner to greet us and that I have to say, is a service, really hard to get. I would like to thank Wan Kong for the kind invite and the Owner,Chua Chin Hua, for the excellent service. I will definitely come again, hungry for more.

The Sharepoint Portal project has really got me busy this week. I even had to go to work today to create a database for the project. But what I find more frustrating is to find out that they contractor workers had cut off the electricity cable ofour office. Had to move the server to the development room. Good thing today I am alone because my colleagues had to come today too. It's really been a busy week for our department this week. We are preparing for the Sixth 2nd Echelon Singapore-Brunei Senior Civil Servants Exchange Program, which will be held on the 10th - 13th December 2007 at Rizqun International Hotel. And we are in charge of the Program books and the invitations, which should be delivered tomorrow. But since I am doing the Sharepoint thing, I can't really be much of a help to them. *hehe*

After work, had to rush to the Royal Brunei Sports Complex for a friendly football match, Bloggers against RBA Pilots. The plan was to have 9 side match so I brought my futsal shoes because I assumed it should be indoors but when I arrived, we are actually playing on the field, 11 side. WOW. Since I left my football boots at home, which is like 20 minutes away, I decided to buy a new one. Took me about half an hour to negotiate with the Indian guy but at last I got it for $75. From $179. Good deal. And the Indian guy also promised me that we will win the game if I wear the boots. Well, guess what, he lied. We lost to the RBA team 6 - 3 but atleast I scored a goal. Assisted by myself *haha*. So I think the boots are 70% worth buying. Later we hung out at U-ssof Cafe to celebrate(???) and then I went to chill at Abu's place and went home at about 9'ish. I don't want to mention about my phone, that I left back at the office. *hehe*

Still can't believe that Im actually typing this post on my newly arrived desktop, my iMac. I did'nt go out today, been cleaning up my desk all day and customising the look and feel of the so it looks like my MacBook Pro.. But of course with bigger screen though *haha*

So far, Awesome is the only thing I could say about my new Mac. Though I'm still getting used to the thin keyboard I have to say the screen is the best. It really makes it easy with the 24 inch monitor. I can open 4 windows without having them sized down or overlapping each other, which makes it more convenient. I havent used my Mac to the max as of now but I am yet to expect more from the 2.8Ghz processor, 2Gb Ram and the graphic card. I have'nt install Windows yet but hey, with Mac, why do you need windows? ;) All my werk can be done better with Mac.

I apologise for the lack of update this week. I have been busy with the Sharepoint portal project, assigned to me and my team. Due is on the 17th this month but we have yet to learn the Microsoft Office Sharepoint and Microsoft Sharepoint Designer and at the same time to create a live portal for the office. It really is a challenge considering our team consist of freshies with no experience with the software but challenge is what one needs to get it going. Good thing we have people from Microsoft to come down and provide some helping hands. Really hectic though, but it is fun actually since it keeps us busy the whole month. Now if you think we government people are just a bunch of laybacks, I have to say you are wrong. We do have work to do. Proper ones.

I am expecting my new iMac today. *Hooray* Arrived yesterday but I can only pick it up today. Well, hofully I can get it today. Waited for 3 weeks for it to be shipped here all because it is customised. But hey, I'm sure it is worth the wait. For 3 weeks waiting, I get a 24" iMac with a processor of 2.8 GHz Core2Extreme, 2GB Ram, 500GB HDD, Ati Radeon 2600HD Graphics and the thin keyboard. And ofcourse it comes with the latest Mac OS X Leapord. Will write a review once I get a feel of it. Can't wait for lunchtym. *Hehe*

Went to my friend, ann's BBQ party last night. I don't really know what the occasion really was but I knew I must not miss it. I haven't met her for more than one year and gladly she has'nt change much. As always, things to expect there are the yummy barbecue chicken and lamb, her sphagetti (sesiapun) and the bouncer. :D too bad I did'nt bring extra bajus. Sengaja pulang tu *hehe* Hope you're happy always beside Dave. He's such a nice lad. Been nice to meet him. Anyway, Can't wait for the Miri trip this new years eve. *hehe*

Had a friendly match with the Public Service Commission today at Padang Kebajikan. The planned kick-off was at 4 but some of our team members came late so we had to start late. *hehe* The organiser was late too due to an unforeseen problem, leaving us with no goalie. Poor Azrey had to be the replacement goalie. But hey, atleast he only missed one goal. But nonetheless, he did a good job.

So the first goal was scored by, um, i think it's an own goal from the opposing team's side, giving us the lead by one goal. Shortly, Rinol from PSC scored their first goal and the game tied. A few minutes before the half-time whistle, our team got the lead when Sulong headed the ball right into the net. In the early Second half of the game, "Anonymous" from PSC scored the equaliser making it PMO 2 - 2 PSC. About 20 minutes in the second half, Fadli of PMO scored the winning goal for PMO.

PMO won the match with the score; PMO 3 - 2 PSC. It was quite a fun game and everyone seemed to be fit, considering this is our first game after 2 months break. It rained quite heavily for a couple of minutes though, but the game had to go on. So in the end, the match did gave us an opportunity to get together among the officers, staffs and our fellow colleagues from the other department through sports.

Attended a little "Kenduri" at work today to celebrate the officers and staffs who are going to perform the haj this year. The food looked nice but I did'nt had any. Diet, ofcourse. I gained 5kg for the past few weeks even after all the runnings and workouts so I think it's time to control my eating... Though I had sphagetti, nasi bungkus and shepherd pie for lunch... Atleast, i skip dinner.... Hopefully. *hehe* Anyway, I manage to take some shots at the kenduri today. The deputy minister and Pg Anak Khairul Khalil was there aswell.

So I went to Jerudong Park Playground few days back with my cousins. The plan was to go on the supakart ride so I didnt bring my camera along. We arrived the place at about 6:05 pm and parked the car at the playground area. Entrance for parking was $1.00 and we bought the "all day pass" which is $5.00 per person. So with this "all day pass", we will be able to play all the rides at the playground for that day.

From the car park, we took a shuttle to the supakart ride which is at the fouth phase side of the playground. The shuttle was free but the driver was'nt friendly. So it was a quiet, boring ride. Along the way, all I can see was old dead rides, not functioning anymore. Even the tall tower was'nt there anymore. The place seemed dead.

So we arrived at the supakart ride. We present our tickets before riding the go-karts when the "jaga" guy said to us:

"Tau sudah rulesnya nie ah untuk gokat anie ah?"

I was like "what rules?", and he explained the actual ticketing for the supakart ride. It goes like this:

1. "all day pass" tickets can be used for all rides for the day
2. Supakart can use only for one time ride, then after that have to pay $2 per ride.

I felt cheated when he told me that. But I thought it makes sense since they have to spend more on the fuel and stuffs so we agreed to the regulations. Nevertheless, we had fun and i almost got into an accident when I tried to overtake my bro. *hehe*

After the supakart, we tried the waterlog. After waterlog, we thought that we would go to the bumper car ride so we waited for the shuttle to take us back to the other side of the playground. But it never came. We saw an empty shuttle near the waterlog and asked the guy next to it. But instead the guy said "inda ku tau. aku jaga sini". Really rude. I wonder why the jaga people at the playground are so rude, considering the job was really easy and the got paid for it. So we walked all the way to the bumper car ride.

In the end, we did have fun at the dead playground. We langgar'ed lotsa kids at the bumper car ride and went home satisfied. But the disappointing thing about the place was the personnels there. They never seemed to smile, not even a little. I know we're just a bunch of guys but I really think that they need to be more friendly. I think the person in charge should take this into consideration.

Can't say anything much about the rides there. The only rides still open were:

Jerudong Park Playground has been around for more than 10 years. It opened in 1995 as the only theme park in the world which is FREE. I remember when it just opened, you would see alot of crowd flocking the place every night. Every saturday night you would expect to see like more than 10 busses from Miri parked at the food stalls. After it was announced that the place is no longer free, the popularity of the place went downhill and people stopped coming to the place and after awhile the place was left to die. Even so, people would still come to the place every now and then especially during the school holiday. Opening hour is from 2pm to 10pm every day except on Monday and Tuesday.

My suggestion, if you want to go there only for go-kart, buy the "per ride" pass which is $3 and then pay $2 for the consequent ride.
